Autumn Reading 2021
Dear Parents and Guardians at IEST,
As we look ahead to an active and exciting autumn term, I would like to emphasise the importance of reading for pleasure as a complement to regular studying and learning. It is incredibly important for adolescents to be given time to unwind during the day. Why not try the combined stimulation and relaxation of reading for pleasure, together as a family? There is no better way to let the imagination take over and enjoy a stress-free reboost of our cognitive skills. Shared reading time offers endless opportunities to get to know each other from a new perspective by sharing and reflecting on reading adventures while being cosy on the sofa. Please feel free to contact me to get reading suggestions for different age groups. You can also have a look at this website to see what we are currently focusing on in school. I also attach a Reading Diary for those who like a challenge, and if it is filled out and handed in to me at the end of the term, students will be able to finish the year with a Merit for Active Learning. Of course it is possible to fill out several diaries! Teachers will also be given the opportunity to participate in a reading challenge over the term, and there will be some surprises in December for both adults and adolescents who take part. In the meantime, I wish you all a fantastic autumn and lots of reading adventures! Happy Reading, Dr Lisa Ley, Head Librarian at IEST |
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The first Scholastic Book Club leaflet for the school year is now available, and we have set up a School Book Club for you in case you want to treat your children to high quality books in English to celebrate Autumn coming. There are books for each age level from picture books for pre-school children to young adult fiction for ages 15 and up, so maybe you would like to stock up the family library as well?
It is very easy to order:
Go to https://eu-schools.scholastic.co.uk/intl-engelska-skolan-i-taby/digital-book-club to browse the latest books and order online.
For every €1 you spend on this month’s Book Club, our school will earn 20¢ in Scholastic Rewards, which means our school library gets a few new additions to the collection as well.
You pay by credit card and the books will be delivered free of charge to our school and we will distribute them to the students during mentor time. If you order gifts, please contact me so I can make arrangements for the books to be distributed to you directly.
Please place your order online by October 4th, 2021.
Happy Reading,
Sincerely,
Dr Lisa Maria Ley, Head Librarian at IEST

NOVELS
George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four is set in a society terrorised by a totalitarian ideology propagated by The Party. Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth in London, chief city of Airstrip One. Big Brother stares out from every poster, the Thought Police uncover every act of betrayal. When Winston finds love with Julia, he discovers that life does not have to be dull and deadening, and awakens to new possibilities. Despite the police helicopters that hover and circle overhead, Winston and Julia begin to question the Party; they are drawn towards conspiracy. Yet Big Brother will not tolerate dissent - even in the mind. Nineteen Eighty-Four is George Orwell's terrifying vision of a totalitarian future in which everything and everyone is slave to a tyrannical regime.

DYSTOPIAN FICTION
Grade 9 focuses on dystopian fiction and totalitarian regimes this term. They read George Orwell's classic Animal Farm as a Class Novel. 1984 is a perfect complement for students who want to expand their understanding of the Orwellian universe. Here are some other dystopian novels in the library collection that are worth checking out in our Fiction Karin Boye: Kallocain Harry Martinson: Aniara Sally Gardner: Maggot Moon Margaret Atwood: The Handmaid's Tale Aldous Huxley: Brave New World Ray Bradbury: Fahrenheit 451 |
Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time describes the world as seen through the eyes of 15-year-old Christopher, who is on the autistic spectrum. His family situation is difficult, and there are a lot of challenges waiting for him, which he finds confusing and hard to communicate.
It is a mystery story, but also a tale about daring to grow and face fears. "Everyone has learning difficulties, because learning to speak French or understanding relativity is difficult." |
REALISTIC FICTION
Grade 8 focuses on realistic fiction this term, and learn to discover the world of a boy on the autistic spectrum from his own point of view. Here are some other novels dealing with social issues and difficulties in the library collection that may be worth trying: Kathryn Erskine: Mockingbird Patrick Ness: A Monster Calls Brian Conaghan: When Mr Dog Bites Katherine Paterson: Bridge to Terabithia Laurie Halse Anderson: Wintergirls |
FANTASY
- A Grade 7 Class Novel Focus "I think the act of reading imbues the reader with a sensitivity toward the outside world that people who don't read can sometimes lack. I know it seems like a contradiction in terms; after all reading is such a solitary, internalizing act that it appears to represent a disengagement from day-to-day life. But reading, and particularly the reading of fiction, encourages us to view the world in new and challenging ways...It allows us to inhabit the consciousness of another which is a precursor to empathy, and empathy is, for me, one of the marks of a decent human being." John Connolly, in an interview on why he wrote The Book Of Lost Things |
A mixture of fractured fairytale, fantasy and coming of age story in difficult times, The Book Of Lost Things by John Connolly offers a wide range of perspectives on storytelling and on the power of fairytales to help young people find their way out of challenging situations.
A love declaration to the imaginative power of literature! Try some other novels with a similar message in our library collection: Michael Ende: The Neverending Story C.S. Lewis: The Chronicles of Narnia Sally Gardner: Tinder Patrick Ness: A Monster Calls |

Karin Boye - En svensk lyriker |

George Orwell, Notes On Nationalism - Focus on Politics
"The point is that as soon as fear, hatred, jealousy and power worship are involved, the sense of reality becomes unhinged. And, as I have pointed out already, the sense of right and wrong becomes unhinged also. There is no crime, absolutely none, that cannot be condoned when "our" side commits it. Even if one does not deny that the crime has happened, even if one knows that it is exactly the same crime as one has condemned in some other case, even if one admits in an intellectual sense that it is unjustified -- still one cannot feel that it is wrong. Loyalty is involved, and so pity ceases to function." |
George Orwell is more well known for his dystopian fiction, especially Animal Farm and 1984, both of which can be found in our library. He was however also a brilliant essayist, and his ideas on totalitarian power and nationalism are as important and thought-provoking now as when they were written. This short essay can be read as a complement to social studies or English language classes, or as a standalone for those who are interested in discovering the historical roots of our current polarised politics. |
Teachers' Corner: Professional Development
The Spirit Level: Why Equality is Better for Everyone
A well researched and comprehensive study including most developed democracies, The Spirit Level shows clear evidence that equal societies do better overall on health, education, and general safety and wellbeing. The two authors have analysed and compared data to highlight the effect of equality on all parts of a community, not just the poor. In a more competitive, unequal society, stress-related issues and anxiety affect the wealthy to a higher extent than in a more equal society as well. Food for thought, and for action. |
Why is it relevant for teachers? "New developments in neurology provide biological explanations for how our learning is affected by our feelings." "We learn best in stimulating environments when we feel sure we can succeed." |
