The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas
- A powerful voice in realistic young adult fiction!
REALISTIC FICTION
It shows the reality of children who grow up in poverty and in a climate of fear which makes them targets regardless of their actual actions. They are guilty until proven innocent, and they live in a world where everyone is full of rage, and everyone has access to guns, but not necessarily to love, care, and education. They live in a world where they can't hide or blend in, and where they have to develop certain survival skills based on the inherent injustice of the system. They live in America today. What makes this novel so strong is the love and care that shows underneath the hurt, anger and frustration. It shows that racism is no necessity, and that people can communicate properly with each other if they are willing to give diversity a chance. It shows that speaking up is a value in itself, even if justice is denied over and over. |

Losing a loved one is a reality that may be too hard to face!
This is the story about the helpfulness of inner monsters who tell us stories that make us discover our own feelings at a time when all we can think about is the loss that we are waiting for. Yes, waiting for. That is the absurdity of this particular kind of grief. The kind that needs a monster to tell stories that are neither good nor bad, just true. "Stories are wild creatures, the monster said. When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?" But stories heal as well. This one certainly does. But it causes pain first. |

"I saw a new world coming rapidly. More scientific, efficient, yes. More cures for the old sicknesses. Very good. But a harsh, cruel, world. And I saw a little girl, her eyes tightly closed, holding to her breast the old kind world, one that she knew in her heart could not remain, and she was holding it and pleading, never to let her go." |
